Valerie, Lord Mayor and Programme

UP TO 70,000 people from home and abroad are expected to descend on Cork City for the three-day Cork St Patrick’s Festival, presented by Cork City Council from March 17th to 19th – and most will be bringing their mums to enjoy the free family events that will be taking place all weekend!

“It’s the first time in years that Mothers Day has fallen on St Patrick’s weekend and so in honour of that we are urging all families to ‘Take Their Mum To Town’,” said Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr Terry Shannon at the launch of the three-day extravaganza at The Woodford Bar in the heart of Cork last night.

And there’ll be plenty of entertainment for all the family over the long weekend under the theme Going For Gold: Cork Games 2012. Entries for parade participants has been extended until Friday, 2 March so there is still time for all the local community to get involved and use their imagination to interpret the theme in a unique and fun way.

Kevin Cullinane, Marketing Manager, Cork Airport, Sponsor of the festival said: “The influx of visitors to Cork through Cork Airport heralds the start of the tourism season ahead and Cork Airport is excited to be involved in sponsorship of the festival and is looking forward to enjoying all of the events on offer.

“It’s a fantastic time to be in Cork and we expect large numbers to arrive this year in particular as the festival falls on the weekend. Everyone deserves a break and the festival is an ideal opportunity for families and friends to spend a weekend together and enjoy our beautiful city.”

Highlights of the festival include the Barry’s Tea Food Market as well as free on street entertainment including colourful street performers and fantastic live bands on the LivingSocial Music Stage, which will also be on Grand Parade on St.Patrick’s Day and then on St.Patrick Street on Sunday and Monday and of course the Parade which kicks off the weekend on Saturday, 17th March.

One of the major events  of the weekend will be Pulses of Tradition, a vibrant celebration of Irish music at the Triskel Christchurch on St Patrick’s night.

The parade starts at 1pm at the top of South Mall, weaving down to Grand Parade onto St. Patrick’s Street and will finish at the end of St. Patrick’s Street. Cork St. Patrick’s Festival takes place across three days this year with the parade taking place on Saturday, 17th March followed by a Mother’s Day celebration for all the family on Sunday 18th March and the family entertainment will continue through to Monday, 19th March.
